The chairperson of the foundation (women-for-women) in kaduna North western Nigeria Hajiya Maryam Abubakar has embarks on sensitizing large number of Almajirai, destitue and other street children on various preventive ways against mosquito bites and other environmental related diseases.
According to her this is an effort to educate the children on the dangers, malaria diseases and other environmental diseases which include climate change, so as to protect them and prevent them.
Malaria remains a major Public Health problem in Nigeria and causes death and illness in children and adults, especially pregnant women.
This is also a way to see how they can contribute toward raising awareness to other children ,in other to prevent them against all forms of diseases associated with mosquito.
She said Malaria is caused by the parasite Plasmodium and Humans are infected through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. As soon as a human is bitten by an infected mosquito, the parasites reproduce in the host’s liver before infecting and destroying the red blood cells.
Maryam who is also the medical director of “Fatimah clinic” in kaduna says, we must joins hands in supporting the fight against malaria disease in Nigeria, adding that children has a role to play in reducing the spread of the diseases.
This is coming as the world celebrate world international mosquito day,which is aimed at raising awareness.
She said , the fight against mosquitoes involves an extensive understanding of where they breed, when and at what time they feed, how they locate their hosts and where they rest just to mention a few, in order to design and direct the right control measures at the right time to achieve maximum protection to people.
Additionally she said ,Annually Hundreds of Nigerian children and women usually died as a result of mosquito bite, and this is contributing to maternal maternity across the 36 of Nigeria and other environmental problems.
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden.
As a result of the campaign world wide and the intervention by UNICEF, WHO, Government and other Humanitarian organization NGO & CSO, the mosquito populations have reduced tremendously over the years with consequent reductions in pathogens they transmit and several lives have been saved and improved.
Responding comrade mohammed zakariyya the Director African Climate reporters says, sensitizing the children will help in combatting malaria.
Adding that there is the need for ministry of environment to double-up effort in the fight against environmental degrading.
